"All good things come to those who wait." Growing up, I heard that phrase from my mother more often than not. Of course my retort was always, "No better time than the present." For those of you who have been looking for more significant construction than building road-after road-after road for the use of solo drivers, that time has come.
If you have driven in Virginia on or close to the Beltway, you have probably seen what looks similar to the Big Dig in some areas and more like construction about to happen in others. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is in the midst of a large undertaking around the region that has been affectionately coined, Virginia Megaprojects.
Working closely with Arlington employers, I talk to a lot of people who commute into Arlington. Many of these people are affected by the Megaprojects one way or another. If they themselves aren't driving through it, chances are they are sharing their route with people who are trying to avoid it.
To keep up to speed with the project, I receive VDOT's email update bulletins and came across this video presenting the "Future of the Beltway - and beyond". Highway, rail, transit and ride-sharing; bridges with pedestrian access and bicycle access - it has it all! Of course there will be some considerable delays and shut-downs to the current system to provide all these options, but to someone who promotes alternative modes of transportation, it is music to my ears.
I guess my mother was right - all good things come to those who wait. And soon enough, there will be no better time than the present when it comes to options for getting around the region.
