This weekend, more than one billion people around the globe will participate in Earth Day 2012. Established in 1970 and held annually on April 22 ever since, Earth Day aims to inspire awareness of and appreciation for earth and our environment. This year, Earth Day celebrations will be held throughout our region, from the National Mall to our own Arlington County.
Celebrate Earth Day here in Arlington by joining Arlington’s Car Free Diet, WalkArlington and BikeArlington at George Mason University’s Arlington Campus second annual Earth Week Community Fair from 12 noon to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 22! The fair is free of charge and will highlight a diversity of businesses, non-profit organizations, research centers, and student groups that promote environmentally-friendly practices and policies. There will be food, music, sustainability-focused educational programs, and performances for kids.
Additionally, as part of Mason’s Community Earth Week Fair, George Mason University has partnered with Arlington Public Schools for Operation Rain Barrel, a fun, creative project to engage students in learning about environmental sustainability. George Mason University provided 20 rain barrels to participating Arlington Public Schools to be painted artistically. These students’ artistic rain barrels will be auctioned off at the George Mason fair, and the proceeds from the auction will benefit two important programs: the Arlington County Council of PTAs Scholarship Fund and Mason's own Early Identification Program (EIP). EIP is a college-prep program for children who would be the first in their family to attend college. Mason provides this special program to seven school jurisdictions in Northern Virginia. Here in Arlington, about 25 students are enrolled in EIP annually.
To learn more about the rain barrels, pick up resources on car-free transit modes like walking and biking, and gather additional tips on supporting a healthy planet and a sustainable future, come visit the Car-Free Diet table at the Earth Week Community Fair on Sunday!
I hope all people on Earth support or cooperate on earth week. I'd love to see a dark Earth on Earth hour. A big amount of electricity would be saved. I hope we can do that everyday - saving electricity.
