What's most remarkable in all this -- Metro competance not withstanding -- is the IRS' fixation on this. The transit benefit was intended for transit use; the parking benefit for people who park at work, such as their office building's basement garage. Parking at a Metro lot is use of transit; Metro parking should be a transit benefit and all this multiple purse Smart Benefit business is nonsensical. Metro and its riders should not have been put through all of this.

Arlington County provides a $25 monthly benefit to employees who bike or walk. Only the bike employees would receive the tax benefit though. They also provide 60% transit/vanpool subsidy and free parking to carpools of 3+. One of the problems with these benefit is that you can only choose one.

Yes it would be interesting to know if any private sector companies were doing this and when and if the Federal sector has started doing the bike benefit.

Allen Muchnick

What ever happened to the federal bicycle commuting benefit? Is any Washington area employer implementing the bicycle commuting benefit?
