International Walk and Bike to School Day is TOMORROW, October 7, and in Arlington, WALKArlington is partnering with Arlington Public Schools (APS) to welcome students to the ranks of the car-free! Many APS staff and school PTAs will also incorporate activities focused on biking and walking into the curriculum throughout October.
Arlington is not alone. Schools around the world will also celebrate International Walk and Bike to School Day on Wednesday, October 7. Part of a month-long celebration, Walk and Bike to School Day encourages students to walk and bike to school while educating them on the health and environmental benefits of walking and biking. The event also raises community awareness about the importance of pedestrian safety education, safe routes to schools, well-maintained walkways, and traffic calming in neighborhoods and around schools.
Glebe Elementary School will be highlighted by APS in 2009 in recognition of the school's demonstrated commitment to walking as part of a healthy lifestyle. County and APS officials will join Glebe students and family members as they walk and bike their way to school together. Educational activities and refreshments will be provided for participants at rest stops en route and at Glebe when students arrive following their morning "commute." A rally will be held at school before students head to class.
Hooray for the next generation of car-free Arlingtonians! And whether it's Walk and Bike to School Day or any school day, please help keep Arlington's students safe by following these back to school safety tips from Arlington County Police.
