Oh happy day! You can now add value to your SmarTrip card at any Commuter Store®. The Commuter Stores are the first non-WMATA locations in the region to have these table-top CPOS (Compact Point-of-Sale) machines. The CPOS machines are supplied by WMATA and allow store staff to add value to your new or existing card (card must be present to add value) with cash or credit card. You can also check the balance on your card.

I think it's great that WMATA is finally expanding the network of CPOS machines that allow people to add value to their SmarTrip cards, but they need to expand this network much further. With the announcement that WMATA is eliminating paper transfers beginning in January, they need to have an aggressive plan to get these CPOS machines out to more public locations, such as grocery stores and banks, as quickly as possible. Once paper transfers are eliminated, bus riders will need more options than the Metrobus to add value to their SmarTrip cards. Can you imagine the delays if every bus rider had to add value to their SmarTrip card on a Metrobus?

Bus riders should have to use Smart Trip anyway. That and Metro should aggressively push riders to EXIT FROM THE REAR ONLY. When people always pay cash and always exit the front, delays are rampant.
From a disgruntled daily rider who no longer takes the bus, thankfully.
