Transit directions are being developed. I sat in on a meeting in Google's DC offices where people from many area transit agencies were working with Google staff. What they had so far was definitely not ready for prime time, but they were working on it. I think it's more difficult here than some other cities because we have so much public transit -- the Metro system (including all the bus routes) is a huge thing, then there are all the other rail and bus systems.

No, we STILL can't get transit directions on Google Maps (no matter how hard I whine about it), but I just found that the walking directions option was working fine for some of my walks in Alexandria. So, when did you try? I don't remember seeing it yesterday; maybe you just missed it.
Also, FYI, it worked well. It gave me the best route for a walk that has taken me a month of trial-and-error to find (well, mostly error).
